What Does an SEO Agency Actually Do?

A plain-English explanation of what SEO agencies do all month, what the work looks like week to week, and what you should actually expect to see from it.

Most businesses know they should "do SEO." Far fewer know what that actually means — or what they'd be paying an agency to do all month.

This isn't a sales pitch. It's a plain-English explanation of what an SEO agency does, what the work looks like week to week, and what you should expect to see from it. If you're considering hiring one, this is what to look for.

01 — The short version

An SEO agency makes your website show up when people search for what you do.

That's it. Everything else is detail. When someone in your area types "emergency plumber" or "chartered accountant near me" into Google, an SEO agency's job is to make sure your business appears — ideally on the first page, ideally near the top.

Getting there involves a lot of different work, which is why it confuses people. Here's what that work actually is.

02 — What the work involves

Five things a good SEO agency does every month.

  • Technical SEO. Making sure Google can crawl, read, and understand your site. Site speed, mobile performance, broken links, duplicate pages, structured data. It's invisible to visitors but it's the foundation — nothing else works without it.
  • Keyword research. Finding out what your customers actually search for — not what you think they search for. The words matter. "Boiler repair" and "boiler not working" are searched by very different people at very different stages.
  • On-page optimisation. Making each page on your site clearly about one thing, structured the way Google expects, with the right words in the right places. Titles, headings, content, internal links.
  • Content creation. Writing pages and articles that answer the questions your customers are asking. This is how you rank for more searches — you can't rank for a question you haven't answered.
  • Link building and authority. Getting other reputable sites to reference yours. Google treats links as votes of confidence. Earning them is slow, manual work — which is why it's expensive.

SEO isn't one thing. It's five things, done consistently, in the right order — and measured against what actually matters to your business.

03 — What it looks like month to month

A realistic timeline.

  • Month 1: Full audit. Technical fixes. Keyword strategy agreed. Baseline rankings recorded.
  • Months 2–3: Content starts shipping. Pages optimised. Google Business Profile set up properly. Early ranking movement on low-competition terms.
  • Months 4–6: Rankings improve on target keywords. Traffic increases. First enquiries attributable to organic search.
  • Months 6–12: Compounding. Content published earlier is now ranking. Authority builds. Cost per lead drops as organic replaces paid.

If an agency promises page one in 30 days, walk away. Real SEO is slow because it's building something that lasts — not gaming an algorithm that'll change next quarter.

04 — What a good agency reports

Results, not activity.

A bad SEO report tells you how many hours were spent and how many "optimisations" were made. A good SEO report tells you:

  • Which keywords moved, and by how much
  • How much organic traffic came in, and from which pages
  • How many enquiries or sales came from organic search
  • What's being done next, and why

If you can't see the line from the work to the revenue, you're not being shown the right numbers. Ask for them.

05 — What we do differently

Every client sees their own numbers, live.

At Your Digital Team, clients get access to a live dashboard showing rankings, traffic, and leads — the same view we work from. No waiting for a monthly PDF. No wondering what's happening.

We start every engagement with a full audit that's yours to keep whether you hire us or not. See how our SEO service works or book a free review.

Not sure whether you need an agency or could handle it in-house? We wrote about that too: Why hire an SEO agency instead of doing it yourself?

06 — Red flags to watch for

Good SEO should never feel like a monthly mystery.

Be cautious if an agency cannot explain what changed, reports only impressions and traffic, promises guaranteed rankings, builds large numbers of low-quality links, or avoids connecting its work to enquiries and revenue.

A useful relationship should leave you knowing what was done, why it mattered, what changed, and what happens next. If the work cannot be explained plainly, the reporting is not doing its job.
