Which Social Media Platform Is Actually Right for Your Business?

Social mediaPublished 24 Sep 2026
There is no single best social media platform for a small business. There is only the best platform for your audience, your offer and the type of proof you can create consistently.
Choosing badly wastes time. Choosing well makes every post, advert and testimonial work harder.
01 — Start with the customer
The right platform is where buying attention already exists.
Before choosing a channel, ask who you need to reach, what they are looking for, and what would make them trust you.
A local homeowner choosing a tradesperson behaves differently from a marketing manager choosing a B2B supplier. A fashion buyer behaves differently from someone comparing accountancy services.
Your platform choice should follow that behaviour.
02 — Facebook
Still strong for local and trade businesses.
Facebook remains useful for local services, trades, home improvement, community-based offers and businesses that benefit from recommendations.
It works well when you can show proof: before-and-after photos, reviews, recent jobs, local availability and clear offers.
It is not glamorous, but for many local businesses it is still where the customer is.
03 — Instagram
Best when the product or result is visual.
Instagram suits hospitality, beauty, fitness, interiors, fashion, cars, venues, events and brands where the result can be shown quickly.
It is harder for invisible services, but not impossible. You just need a format: client wins, simple advice, behind-the-scenes proof, short reels and useful carousels.
04 — LinkedIn
The sensible place for B2B trust.
LinkedIn works when your buyer is a founder, director, manager, recruiter, consultant or professional services lead.
The content can be less polished and more useful. Point of view, case studies, lessons, results and clear thinking perform better than generic corporate updates.
05 — TikTok
Strong for attention, harder for every business to convert.
TikTok can be powerful for younger audiences, consumer brands, education, entertainment and businesses with a natural short-form angle.
It is less obvious for some service businesses, but it can work when the founder or team is willing to show personality and teach consistently.
06 — Our recommendation by business type
Pick one main channel first.
Local trades: Facebook first, Instagram second. Visual brands: Instagram first, TikTok if you can commit to video. B2B services: LinkedIn first. Ecommerce: Instagram, TikTok and paid social depending on product and margin.
Do not try to be everywhere badly. One consistent channel beats four neglected ones.
