How Much Do SEO Agencies Charge in the UK?

UK SEO agency pricing explained — what each tier costs, what drives the price, how fees are structured, and what you should get for your money.

SEO pricing is one of the most opaque corners of the marketing industry. Most agencies won't quote until you've sat through a discovery call. The ones that do publish prices often bury them.

Here's the honest answer. UK SEO agencies charge between £300 and £10,000+ per month. Where you fall depends on your competition, your goals, and who you hire. Below is what each price band actually buys.

01 — The price bands

What SEO costs by tier.

  • Freelancer — £300–£800 — One person, part-time, basic on-page and some content. Good for local businesses in low-competition markets.
  • Small agency — £800–£2,500 — Full strategy, technical fixes, monthly content, link building, proper reporting. The sweet spot for most SMEs.
  • Mid-size agency — £2,500–£5,000 — Dedicated team, larger content volume, digital PR, competitive markets.
  • Enterprise — £5,000–£10,000+ — National brands, e-commerce at scale, multiple markets or languages.

02 — What moves the price

Four things that change what you'll pay.

  • Competition. Ranking "plumber in Hartlepool" is a different job to ranking "personal injury solicitor London." The harder the market, the more work it takes.
  • Current state of your site. A technically sound site with good content is a head start. A slow, broken site needs fixing before anything else works — and that's extra time.
  • Content volume. Two blog posts a month vs ten. Each piece needs research, writing, optimisation, and publishing.
  • Link building. Earning quality links is slow, manual outreach. Agencies that do it properly charge for it. Agencies that buy links cheaply are putting your site at risk.

If an SEO agency is charging £150/month, they're either not doing the work or they're doing it in a way that'll get you penalised. Both cost you more in the end.

03 — Pricing models

How agencies structure fees.

Monthly retainer. Most common. Fixed fee, ongoing work. Predictable for both sides. Usually 6 or 12 month minimums because SEO takes time.

Project-based. One-off audits, site migrations, technical fixes. £500–£5,000 depending on scope. Good if you have an in-house team who'll act on the findings.

Hourly. £50–£150/hour. Rare for ongoing SEO because it disincentivises efficiency. Fine for consultancy or ad-hoc advice.

Performance-based. Pay per ranking or lead. Sounds appealing but usually comes with fine print — and agencies that offer it tend to use aggressive tactics to hit targets fast. Be cautious.

04 — What you should expect for your money

Non-negotiables at any price.

  • A written audit before work starts
  • A clear list of target keywords and why they were chosen
  • Monthly reporting showing rankings, traffic, and leads — not just activity
  • Full ownership of everything created — content, accounts, data
  • Honest timelines. If it's going to take six months, they should say so
