How to Choose an SEO Agency (Without Getting Burned)

SearchPublished 13 Sep 2026
The questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and what a good SEO agency looks like from the outside — before you sign anything.
Choosing an SEO agency is harder than it should be. Everyone promises page one. Everyone has case studies. Most of them sound identical on a sales call.
Here's how to cut through it — the questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and what a good agency looks like from the outside.
01 — Before you start
Know what you're hiring for.
"SEO" means different things to different businesses. Before speaking to anyone, get clear on:
- What you want to rank for — specific services, specific locations
- What success looks like — more calls? more online sales? more visibility?
- Your budget — realistic monthly spend, and for how long
- Your timeline — SEO takes 4–6 months minimum to show meaningful results
An agency that asks you these questions before quoting is a good sign. One that quotes without asking is guessing.
02 — Questions to ask
Eight things every agency should be able to answer.
- What would you do in the first 30 days? Should include an audit, technical fixes, and a keyword strategy. Not "start building links."
- How will we measure success? Should be rankings, traffic, and leads — not "impressions" or "visibility score."
- Can I see a report from a current client? Anonymised is fine. If they refuse, that's the answer.
- Who will actually do the work? Some agencies sell with senior people and deliver with juniors or offshore teams.
- What happens to the content and accounts if we leave? Should be yours. Full stop.
- How do you build links? If the answer involves buying, private networks, or anything you don't understand, run.
- What won't SEO fix? A good agency will tell you if your website, pricing, or offer is the problem.
- Can I speak to a client? Not a testimonial — a phone call.
The best SEO agencies talk about what they won't do more than what they will. Honesty about limits is the strongest signal you'll get.
03 — Red flags
Walk away if you see these.
- Guaranteed rankings or timelines — nobody controls Google
- "We'll submit your site to 500 directories" — that was SEO in 2008
- Refusal to share who's doing the work
- Reports that only show activity, not outcomes
- 12-month contracts with no exit clause
- Prices dramatically below market — see what SEO actually costs
- Pressure to sign today
04 — What good looks like
Signs you've found the right one.
- They audit before they quote
- They explain things in language you understand
- They show you data, not decks
- They're honest about timelines and competition
- They have clients in businesses like yours
- You can reach a real person when you need to
