Squarespace vs Shopify: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Agency thinkingPublished 21 Sep 2026
Squarespace and Shopify are both good platforms. They are just good at different jobs.
The right choice depends less on which platform is “best” and more on what your business needs the website to do every day.
01 — The short answer
Choose based on what you sell.
If you sell services, take enquiries, show work, publish content and need a polished brochure site, Squarespace is often the simpler choice.
If you sell products online and need stock control, payments, shipping, discount codes, abandoned cart flows and ecommerce reporting, Shopify is usually the better foundation.
Trying to make Squarespace behave like a serious ecommerce system gets awkward. Trying to make Shopify behave like a lightweight brochure site can feel heavier than necessary.
02 — Where Squarespace wins
It is strong for service businesses and smaller content-led sites.
Squarespace is quick to manage, clean for portfolios, strong for basic pages, and usually easier for non-technical teams to update.
For consultants, local service businesses, trades, clinics, creatives and small agencies, it can be a very sensible choice. You can launch quickly, keep the site tidy, and avoid overbuilding.
The limitation appears when you need more complex data, advanced ecommerce, custom integrations or unusual page behaviour.
03 — Where Shopify wins
It is built for selling products.
Shopify has stronger ecommerce tools, a bigger app ecosystem, better stock and order handling, and clearer routes for scaling an online store.
If your website is mainly a shop, Shopify is not overkill. It is the thing built for the job.
The trade-off is that custom content, service pages and editorial layouts can take more care to make feel as polished and flexible as a pure content site.
04 — SEO comparison
Neither platform ranks by magic.
Both can rank well if the site is structured properly, loads quickly, uses clean titles and descriptions, has useful content, and matches search intent.
Squarespace can be perfectly fine for local SEO and service pages. Shopify can rank very well for product and collection searches. The platform matters less than the implementation.
Bad copy, weak structure and slow pages will hold either one back.
05 — Pricing compared honestly
The monthly fee is only part of the cost.
Squarespace is usually cheaper and simpler for a small service website. Shopify often costs more once apps, themes and transaction needs are included, but it earns that cost when ecommerce is central.
The bigger cost is choosing the wrong platform and rebuilding later. A clean decision at the start saves more than a small monthly price difference.
06 — Which we would recommend
We build around the business model.
For service businesses, local businesses and simple lead-generation sites, we usually look at Squarespace or a custom build first.
For ecommerce, product catalogues and stores that need real operational tools, Shopify usually makes more sense.
If you are unsure, send us what you sell. We will tell you which platform we would use and why.
