How Much Does Local SEO Cost — and Is It Worth It?

UK local SEO pricing by tier, what moves the cost, and the maths that shows whether it's worth it for your local business.

If you serve customers in a specific area — a town, a city, a region — local SEO is probably the highest-return marketing you can do. It's also one of the most misunderstood.

Here's what it costs in the UK, what you're paying for, and how to know if it's worth it for your business.

01 — What local SEO actually is

Showing up when someone nearby searches for what you do.

When someone types "electrician near me" or "dentist Sunderland" into Google, three things appear: the map pack (three businesses with pins), organic results, and ads. Local SEO is about winning the first two.

It involves your Google Business Profile, reviews, local citations, location-specific pages on your website, and making sure Google knows exactly where you are and what you do.

02 — What it costs

UK local SEO pricing.

  • DIY / basic — £0–£200 — Google Business Profile set up, a few citations, occasional reviews. Fine if you're in a small town with little competition.
  • Single location — £300–£800 — GBP optimisation, review strategy, local pages, citation building, monthly reporting. Right for most trades and local services.
  • Multi-location — £800–£2,000 — Everything above across 2–5 locations, with location-specific content and separate tracking.
  • Competitive market — £1,500–£3,000+ — London, Manchester, Birmingham — high competition needs more content, more links, more work.

03 — What affects the price

Three things that move the number.

  • Competition. Ranking a plumber in Bishop Auckland is straightforward. Ranking a plumber in Central London is a fight. The market sets the workload.
  • Number of locations. Each location needs its own Google Business Profile, its own page, its own reviews. Five locations is five times the work.
  • Starting point. A business with 200 five-star reviews and a solid website is halfway there. A business with no GBP and a broken site needs foundational work first.

For a local business, the map pack is worth more than any ad. Three positions, no cost per click, and the customer is already looking for you.

04 — Is it worth it?

The maths for a typical local business.

A plumber paying £500/month for local SEO. After 4 months, they're in the map pack for "plumber [town]" and "emergency plumber [town]." That generates 8 extra enquiries a month. At a 50% close rate and £250 average job, that's £1,000/month in new revenue from a £500 investment — and it compounds, because rankings hold.

Compare that to Google Ads, where the same 8 leads might cost £400–£600 in ad spend every single month, forever.
